Gniezno
Miasto w województwie wielkopolskim, siedziba władz powiatu gnieźnieńskiego. Leży na Pojezierzu Gnieźnieńskim wśród jezior Jelonek, Jez. Świętokrzyskiego i Winiary, na terenie dawnego jeziora plioceńskiego. Pierwsza stolica Polski, siedziba arcybiskupów gnieźnieńskich, siedziba pierwszej metropolii kościelnej, ośrodek akademicki; od 19 grudnia 2009 siedziba kurii prymasowskiej[6]. Miasto wznosi się na siedmiu pagórkach: Lecha, św. Piotra, św. Wawrzyńca, św. Michała, Panieńskim, Krzyżackim i Żnińskim. Obecnie jest siedzibą władz wiejskiej gminy Gniezno i powiatu gnieźnieńskiego. Według danych GUS z 30 czerwca 2010 Gniezno miało 69 526 mieszkańców Gniezno usytuowane jest we wschodniej części województwa wielkopolskiego, ok. 10 km od granicy z województwem kujawsko-pomorskim, w powiecie gnieźnieńskim. Dawniej należało do województwa kaliskiego, od 1768 roku do II rozbioru Polski istniało odrębne województwo gnieźnieńskie. Do czasu reformy administracyjnej w 1999 roku należało do województwa poznańskiego. Miasto znajduje się na Nizinie Wielkopolskiej. Według regionalizacji fizycznogeograficznej Gniezno leży na obszarze mezoregionu Pojezierze Gnieźnieńskie, charakteryzującego się wieloma polodowcowymi jeziorami otoczonymi lasami mieszanymi. Mezoregion ten należy do makroregionu Pojezierze Wielkopolskie
Żnin
Pierwsi ludzie pojawili się w okolicach Żnina kilkanaście tysięcy lat temu – po ustąpieniu lądolodu skandynawskiego i pojawieniu się tundry. Najstarsze ślady osadnictwa pochodzą sprzed 10 tysięcy lat – z okresu paleolitu. Liczne znaleziska archeologiczne świadczą o kontaktach Żnina ze światem antycznym. Kontakty takie umożliwiała droga bursztynowa biegnąca od Adriatyku przez Śląsk i Kalisz do Bałtyku. Przebieg tej drogi przedstawia mapa geografa z Aleksandrii, Ptolemeusza (90-168 r. n.e.). Umieszczony na niej gród Auscaucalis na północ od Konina (Setidava) i Kalisza (Calisia) od niedawna identyfikowany jest przez niektórych badaczy z najdawniejszym Żninem. Auscaucalis zostało odwzorowane na antycznej mapie Klaudiusza Ptolemeusza z lat 142-147 naszej ery.
